ABOUT OTTB Lives Matter

WHAT ARE OTTBS?

Off the Track Thoroughbreds, or OTTBs, are thoroughbred horses that were bred and trained to be raced at tracks around the country, hopefully to win money at big races such as the Kentucky Derby. Most of these horses do not succeed, and quickly get discarded by their owners for their next best hopeful horse. What happens to these discarded horses? Many different things, but most do not find good homes and end up in sad, dangerous, and deadly situations such as kill pens and worse. We hope to educate and advocate for these beautiful horses so fewer end up in kill pens and more find wonderful loving homes where they can share their deep, loving, kind hearts with those who will care for them.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT OTTBS?

All proceeds go to fund further rescue, support, and advocacy for off the track thoroughbreds.  We are continuing to develop merchandise. Drop your suggestions in our email!

Our Boys

OTTB Lives Matter started with Callum and Thirsty, but our dream is to advocate and save many more. These beautiful animals are wonderful all around animals, whether for companionship, western or english disciplines, trail riding, and many other wonderful enjoyments. Please consider a thoroughbred when you are looking for your next horse. We are compiling lists of thoroughbred and OTTB rescues to explore. Please stop back when looking for your next horse for resources.

OUR INSPIRATION

Our Off the Track Thoroughbreds, Callum and Thirsty

We purchased Callum first. He is a true thoroughbred; sensitive, wary, and unsure of humans.

Once you earn his trust and his heart, there are no limits to what he will do for you or the depths of his love. His deep brown eyes and beautiful strong head are the epitome of the thoroughbred breed.

He is being retrained to be an eventer by a very brave thirteen year old equestrian.

Callum excelled at his first dressage show, exhibiting his true champion heart.

Thirsty was our most recent purchase, and inspired by our love of Callum. He is our giant gentleman gelding (17.2 hands), a prince among us.

He has carried many on his back over the years, kindly, safely, and with honor.

He has joined our family to train in dressage with our other young brave equestrian family member. He will enjoy nice trail rides and continue to honor the thoroughbred breed and spirit.

Thirsty is always gentle and kind, and very giving in his spirit. Being around him is true therapy.

No better feeling!

Growing pains in our training

Callum is a very sensitive young thoroughbred. We struggled through saddle fit, changes in weather, chiropractic adjustments, ulcers, diet, and so many other trials and errors to make this boy as comfortable as we could. We take things slow, listen to him as well as we can, not push through any pain, and be as responsive as we can to what he is saying to us. (Notice in this video a loose rein, no spurs, no crop, and no martingale to restrict his head.) Trust in each other is what matters!
